Slow Speed Sweet Spot Vs. Fast Speed Off-Center

During any given round of golf with my buddies, our conversations almost always include the question “Hey, just how hard are you hitting the ball? What do you think your best swing speed was today?”

Of course, those kinds of questions inevitably spark an inconclusive 4-way debate on whether a ball striking the clubface square on its sweet spot at a lower swing speed is more effective than a ball striking the clubface off-centre at a higher swing speed.

For most guys, this thing called golf is mostly about distance and accuracy. Heck, there is nothing sweeter than cracking the ball with a straight and long carry down a long par-4 and seeing the ball roll onto the green toward the pin with only a 2-ft putt left to execute. That’s what dreams are made of.

But, if I’m swinging at 98mph hitting square on a long par-4, I’m not a 1-on and 1-putt possibility, am I? And if I’m swinging 117mph hitting off-center, I may be taking my 2nd shot from the parking lot or the next fairway. For me, I would rather play safe… swing slower and square into the sweet spot. Letting one rip wild at 117mph is not for me.

Agree with your post. Would also rather be on the fairway, 9 times out of 10. As long as you have a good launch angle and carry, I think that matters just as much. No worm killers or hockey shots please.

you got to look at why you play golf , for me i love thrashing that one in a round shot 40 meters past my buddies and dont really care where the ball goes the rest of the time .. my feeling is i want to be able to give them the what for about being sooo short off the tee. i guess for me i went to a good teaching pro and he got me to keep the same swing speed but fixed up my clubface so i hit the sweet spot more often.. good enough for tiger to take lessons i think good enough for everyone

The ability to hit the ball and stay consistantly straight by far makes golf more enjoyable. I've just started playing about 9 months ago, and have realize that. The full baseball swing I've enjoy for most of my life needs to be left on the diamond. I have to admit, swinging a driver like a baseball bat feels great!!! Also, I bought a new Akagi wedge, 56 degree last week. First time I swung it, I was pretty straight. I can honestly say I saved about 4-5 strokes for the round.
